The Japanese religious tradition is made up of several major components, including Shinto, Japan’s earliest religion, Buddhism, and Confucianism. Christianity has been only a minor movement in Japan. However, the so-called “new religions” that arose in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries are a prominent feature of Japanese religious life today.

In this unit the geographic distribution of China's ethnic groups will be introduced, as well as the cultural and linguistic features of China's major ethnic groups. Focusing on the Hui, Tibetans, Mongols, and the Miao, topics such as ethnogenesis, sovereignty, assimilation, and stereotypes and representation are addressed.

This curriculum unit uses a variety of activities and resources to learn about Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism in a Chinese context.

Teaching the geographic concepts of region, cultural boundary, and movement can be challenging. This unit helps students explore these ideas as they learn about the geographic distribution and spread of major world religions throughout Asia.
